We drove for hours through the Sahara Desert toward Tripoli, passing war-damaged buildings and being escorted by heavily armed police who said they were protecting us. We explored ancient cave houses, spoke with local residents about life and security in Libya, and visited a horse-riding club where we interviewed a young woman about women’s opportunities and her love for the country. In Tripoli, we visited neighborhoods, a shopping mall, and a perfume shop while observing that locals felt the security situation was gradually improving, despite shortages of petrol and the visible destruction left by the conflict.
