We prepare our 20-year-old Land Rover Defender and set off from Merzouga to cross 200 miles of remote Moroccan Sahara terrain with our dog, using GPX tracks while navigating sand, dried riverbeds, mountains, and changing weather. We camp in the desert, cook, run with our dog, encounter camels and military checkpoints, and repair a failed inverter along the way. Near the end of the route, we face a difficult mountain detour with steep, rocky tracks, deep ruts, rain, and a dangerous drop-off, forcing us to find a safer way down.
