We traveled to Somaliland to understand its culture, people, safety, and complicated political history, while exploring street currency exchanges, a camel farm, and the ancient cave paintings of Las Geel. We learned how Somaliland separated from Somalia after colonial rule, union, civil war, and the destruction of Hargeisa, and we spoke with Dr. Edna Adan about the region’s struggle for recognition. We also visited a livestock market, played football with locals, met girls using basketball to challenge social expectations, and supported an initiative helping girls attend school.
