50 Hours on Europe's Most Dangerous Island

We traveled to Mayotte, a French island near Madagascar, to understand its history, culture, and reputation for danger. We explored the island, struggled with transportation, learned about local crime and migration from residents, and met Jesse, who guided us through a monthly market. We were then invited to observe preparations for a communal futari meal during Ramadan and discovered Mayotte’s matriarchal family traditions.
