We drove our school bus through Azerbaijan and spent days trying to arrange passage on a Soviet-era cargo ferry across the Caspian Sea to Turkmenistan. After discovering that numerous personal items had gone missing from the bus, we struggled to buy tickets, navigate contradictory instructions, and wait in a barbed-wire holding area at the port. We eventually settled in for an uncertain overnight wait, expecting the ferry journey to become a 78-hour ordeal.
