We drove a challenging 300-mile off-road route through Mauritania’s Sahara along the iron ore railway tracks during a severe sandstorm, struggling with poor visibility, soft sand, exhaustion, and repeated vehicle problems. We camped near the massive Ben Amera monolith, crossed remote settlements, and became stranded when our truck broke down, but local mechanics revived it using perfume to clean the wiring. As the expedition became increasingly focused on managing breakdowns rather than exploring, we began preparing to head home while searching for water in another isolated settlement.
