We explored Antananarivo, known locally as Tana, visiting a rough neighborhood where people recycle discarded materials, make sandals from tires, wash clothes in polluted water, and raise pigs as an emergency source of income. We learned about the city’s history, culture, traffic, French architecture, markets, bars, and the challenges faced by its residents. We also visited historic landmarks, an old French café, and more affluent areas while meeting welcoming locals and discovering the city’s striking contrasts.
