Dust & Bones: Entering Peru’s Endless Desert Slums

We leave Lima’s upscale districts to explore informal settlements built across the desert mountains, visiting a market and the enormous cemetery where many people who fled conflict and poverty were buried. We learn how residents cope with limited water, poverty, discrimination, fog-oasis conditions and gang extortion while seeing how rapidly the hills have become populated. We also visit a community project that provides children with a safe place to play, study and eat instead of working in other people’s homes or selling goods on the streets.
