Entering the Murder Capital of the World

We explored Comuna 13 in Medellín, learning about its history of cartel violence, guerrilla conflict, and the 2002 Operation Orion helicopter raid. We walked through the neighborhood, spoke with residents, saw memorials and community art, and visited the famous outdoor escalators. We also watched a street soccer game and left feeling hopeful about the community's transformation into a place of art, unity, and peace.
