We visit Helsinki’s underground bunkers, which can shelter up to 900,000 people and include swimming pools, sports fields, and other facilities. We explore why Finland built this underground infrastructure due to its history and proximity to Russia, and how the country prepared for possible war and eventually joined NATO. We also discuss Finland and Sweden’s decision to seek NATO protection after Russia invaded Ukraine.
