I Found Hell on Earth in Turkmenistan

We travel four hours from Ashgabat along the old Silk Road into the Karakum Desert to visit the Darvaza gas crater, known as the Gates of Hell. We learn how a Soviet drilling accident in 1971 caused the crater to collapse and begin burning, and we experience its intense heat at sunrise and under the stars at night. We stay near the crater, enjoy a local Turkmen dinner, and admire the surrounding desert.
