We explored Bamyan in central Afghanistan, visiting the destroyed fourth-century Buddha statues, ancient citadels, cave homes, local markets, and the communities of the Hazara people. We learned about the region’s history, culture, relative safety, and the freedoms enjoyed by women there. We also traveled to Band-e Amir National Park, where we admired its striking blue lakes and mountainous landscapes, while reflecting on the recent bomb blasts that devastated Bamyan’s marketplace.
