We drove solo through southeastern Kentucky, visiting Whitley City, Harlan, and other former coal-mining communities while learning about poverty, unemployment, and the decline of the coal industry. We visited the birthplace of KFC and tried the original chicken, then met local residents, accepted a ride from hitchhikers, and visited their homes. We explored Harlan with a local resident, seeing its abandoned buildings, bars, and streets while hearing personal stories about life, addiction, jobs, and loss in the region.
