In Afghanistan, A Stranger is a Friend

We drive from Mazar Sharif toward Samangan in northeastern Afghanistan and pick up a hitchhiker who invites us to tour his village. We see the rural landscape, fig trees, mud homes, and river, and we are welcomed into a house with rugs, tea, and an invitation to stay for lunch. We have to continue on the road, but we leave impressed by the warmth and hospitality we encounter.
