Meeting the (Forgotten) Jews of Ethiopia

We explored Gondar in northwestern Ethiopia and visited Fallashia village, a former Jewish community in the Simien Mountains, where we learned about its history and saw preserved homes, a synagogue, and a Jewish cemetery. We then visited a lively synagogue and Jewish neighborhood, where we met Ethiopian Jews studying Torah, learning Hebrew, and observing Shabbat. We finished by sharing traditional coffee with local residents and reflecting on the community’s separation from family members in Israel.
