We arrived in Johannesburg after flying from Budapest via Dubai and explored the city with Jimmy, visiting Nelson Mandela’s statue and former home, a viewpoint, Hilbrow, and an Indian market with an apartheid-era sign. We then traveled to Soweto to see the men’s hostels, temporary settlements, World Cup stadium, cooling towers, and surrounding communities from above. We reflected on Johannesburg’s history, stark wealth differences, and the continuing impact of apartheid before setting off on a road trip around South Africa.
