We explored Kano, Nigeria, visiting a downtown butchers’ market and speaking with locals about inflation, rising food prices, unemployment, and the country’s struggling economy. We observed open sewage, limited sanitation, and workshops processing sheep, goat, snake, and crocodile skins, as well as an illegally traded lion’s head. We also discussed security with residents, including the 2014 mosque attack, and heard that the city is now safer even though economic hardship remains a major concern.
