We stayed in Cerro Gordo, an abandoned 1800s mining town in the California mountains, and experienced the realities of living without heat, running water, or indoor plumbing. We helped Brent restore the former brothel while searching the dirt for historic artifacts, then showered, cooked on an old wood-burning stove, and explored the surrounding landscape. We also watched the sunset overlooking Death Valley and Mount Whitney and dealt with the isolation, cold, and a late-night surprise visitor.
