Russian Ghost Town on the North Pole

We traveled by boat through Svalbard to Pyramiden, an abandoned Soviet mining town near the North Pole, while staying alert for polar bears. We explored its frozen-in-time dormitories, school, canteen, slaughterhouse, and mining facilities, learning how fires, economic crisis, a plane crash, and the mine’s closure caused the town to be deserted. We climbed toward the old mine and reflected on visiting one of the most remote places we had ever seen.
