We travel through Syria’s history, from the ancient civilizations of Damascus and the Umayyad era through the Ottoman period, French occupation, and decades of Assad family rule. We recount the uprising that began in Daraa in 2011, the ensuing war, foreign interventions, displacement, and the opposition’s eventual retreat to Idlib. We then follow the rebels’ 2024 advance through Aleppo, Hama, and Homs to Damascus, where Assad fled, the regime collapsed, and people began looking toward rebuilding a free Syria.
