The First Country to Sink in the World — A Paradise Sinking in the Pacific Ocean

We traveled from Los Angeles through Fiji to Kiribati, crossing the International Date Line and explaining how the lost day and Kiribati’s unusual time zone work. We explored Tarawa, the country’s capital, which is built along a narrow coral atoll with one main road, and saw its lagoon, villages, markets, schools, and landmarks. We also visited a nearby island by boat and learned how rising sea levels threaten Kiribati, while local residents described their deep connection to their ocean home.
