Traveling Across Iraq For 7 Days (Kurdistan)

We spent a week traveling through Iraqi Kurdistan, visiting Erbil, Duhok, the ancient Mar Mattai monastery, Saddam Hussein’s abandoned prison, and the historic Erbil Citadel. We explored local markets, tried traditional food, attended a Kurdish wedding, and learned about the region’s difficult history from our guide and local residents. We also visited Lalish, the holiest city of the Yazidi religion, where we met a young Yazidi man and heard about the community’s experiences with ISIS and displacement.
