Tuva Blues: 'Adventures In Throat Singing'

We travelled across Russia to Tuva to learn about khoomei, visiting Uyar and Abakan before crossing the Sayan Mountains to Kizil, the geographical centre of Asia. We climbed above Kizil, took part in a shamanic protection ceremony, and continued to Akdovrak in western Tuva. There, we met local people, visited a school and a khoomei class, attended a concert, and were treated to a private performance by the rock khoomei group Sai Khanash.
