We explored the streets of Goma to learn about chukudus, handmade wooden bicycles that are used to transport goods and provide income for young Congolese people. We learned how they are built from recycled materials, how they roll downhill without engines or pedals, and how they must be pushed back up the hills. We also rode one through town and discovered that, despite being fun, chukudus can be dangerous because accidents are common.
