Why is this piece of America still owned by France?

We traveled from New York through Canada to Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a French territory off the coast of North America, and explored its colorful villages, peaceful landscapes, and distinctive French culture. We investigated the islands’ role as a major alcohol-smuggling hub during Prohibition and looked into legends connecting the local bootlegging trade to Al Capone. We also visited neighboring islands, met welcoming residents, and experienced the calm community life that makes Saint-Pierre and Miquelon a unique remnant of France’s former North American empire.
