We traveled to northern Mauritania to board an open iron-ore freight train across the Sahara, but first spent the day with a local family and visited the Atlantic coast while waiting for the train. We then rode in an exposed boxcar through the night, enduring freezing temperatures, dust and violent jolts. After around 16 or 17 hours, we reached the iron-ore mines at Zouerate and escaped by crowded Mercedes taxi.
